It is tempting to skip leg day when only the upper body shows in a sherwani. But your legs are your biggest muscles, so training them burns more calories, builds more strength and gives you the stamina to stay on your feet through rituals, photographs and the baraat.

Strong legs also improve posture and make your trousers fit better. Here is how to train them safely and effectively on a wedding timeline.

01

Why Legs Matter Before the Wedding

The quads, hamstrings and glutes make up most of your muscle mass. Training them raises your overall calorie burn and supports metabolic health, which helps fat loss everywhere else.

They are also what lets you stand for hours, dance at the sangeet and walk through ceremonies without fatigue. Aim for 10–16 hard sets a week across two sessions, with a mix of squats, hinges and single-leg work.

02

The Best Leg Exercises

Choose a squat, a hip hinge, a single-leg movement and a finisher:

  • Squat (goblet, barbell or leg press): 3 × 6–12. Start with a goblet squat if you are new to lifting.
  • Romanian deadlift: 3 × 8–10. Builds the hamstrings and glutes; keep your back flat.
  • Walking lunge or split squat: 3 × 8–10 each leg. Fixes strength imbalances and improves balance.
  • Leg curl or hamstring bridge: 2–3 × 12–15. Isolates the hamstrings.
  • Standing calf raise: 3 × 12–20. A small muscle that adds to a strong lower-leg look.

At home, bodyweight squats, split squats, a backpack or dumbbells and a sturdy step let you cover all of this.

03

A Weekly Plan

Train legs twice a week with at least two to three days between sessions, and never on the day before an important event.

  • Session A (quad focus): Squat 4 × 6–8, walking lunge 3 × 10, calf raise 3 × 15.
  • Session B (hip hinge focus): Romanian deadlift 4 × 8–10, split squat 3 × 10, leg curl 3 × 12.
  • Progress: Add a rep or a small weight jump each week, and keep your form strict.
  • Warm up: Five minutes of easy cardio, then two lighter sets of your first movement.

Expect sore legs in the first two weeks; light walking and stretching help recovery. Stop any movement that gives sharp knee or lower-back pain.

04

Food, Recovery and the Final Weeks

Eat 1.6–2.2 g of protein per kg, with carbohydrates around your training to fuel heavy sets. Sleep seven to eight hours and drink water through the day.

In the last 7–10 days, cut back on heavy leg sessions so you are not sore during wedding functions. Keep walking, stretch and eat familiar food. Choose comfortable shoes and keep light mobility work going so your legs feel fresh when it matters.

10–16sets
of leg work a week for most grooms
2×/week
with at least two days between sessions
2–3days
of rest between heavy leg sessions
Bottom Line

Training legs builds the strongest base for fat loss and stamina. Warm up properly, keep your form strict and ask a doctor if you have knee or back concerns.
